CRYSTAL BALL DIVINATION / 1 Many practitioners use their clear crystal orbs for “scrying,” which allows them to divine visually as they do with any number of materials. But some of the more traditional pagans feel that clear crystal balls are best utilized as a medium for the spirit-energy world, such as when divining with a querent. It’s a tradition meant to illicit communication from the third eye, opening additional channels of clairvoyance. The orb is placed in the center of the reading so if asked, the querent can make contact and convey themselves to the receptacle.
I am currently scrying with my new crystal orb and feel open-minded about how it should be used. Still, there are many who claim that clear quartz is superior to crystal glass. I will eventually obtain a quartz ball, as I, like most people, crave the energy of quartz – though I can see how this element might be distracting. However, so is the clear crystal when it magnifies something, like palm lines. Scrying on an orb also differs from a “smooth surface,” because it reminds me of how a bird flying high in the sky might see the earth, or of entire planets, and multidimensionality.
The Star Card was selected to represent clear crystal ball divination instead of the High Priestess Card. I wanted to commune with the physical processes of the practice as opposed to the priest (archetype), and this is represented in Thoth. The Star is fire and light, but also Aquarius the water-bearer, a fixed Air sign symbolizing “farsightedness, vision, higher viewpoint.”
